Summary
GSTN Advisory 687 states that e-way bill numbers will move from 12 to 14 digits, and consolidated e-way bill numbers from 10 to 11 digits, from 1 January 2027. Numbers already generated remain valid and the rest of the process is unchanged, with sandbox testing of the new format available from November 2026.
What it means for you
Businesses, transporters and GSPs should widen ERP and API field lengths before January so e-way bills are not rejected.
